If there is an artist that everyone needs to sit down and listen that would be Sunset Neon. He just released his latest single You Are The Sun last Friday and had a chance to sit down and talk to him about his latest music and what inspires him to as a musician.
The goal for that song was to feel like every 80s training montage or “getting ready for the final showdown” montage all playing at the exact same time. Or just the perfect soundtrack for the combination of fingerless gloves and aviators.
The whole record is the sound of a well-worn and forgotten straight to video VHS being fed into a damaged and glitching sampler to be further chopped up. “Tonight” is the power anthem of that movie and the power anthem for your life.
Probably the title track, “Starlight”. It’s a lo-fi cassette love song and everything about it just came together perfectly when making it. I love that it will be out in the world soon.
The best part was really getting to explore everything I love about hazy 80s memories. A Prince cover, weird VHS intro music, slow jam r’n’b, glitchy pop music and sending that all through a filter of nu disco production. The fact that it could just be this lo-fi dreamy thing that exists for making you feel that atmosphere.
Definitely “Starlight”. Probably why that one’s my favorite. It’s written for someone special. “You Are The Sun” is as well, but “Starlight” just captures the devotion and assuredness of love.
The Duffer Brothers for Season 3 of Stranger Things. Mainly because I just finished Season 2 and it was everything I could have hoped for.
Not just yet. I love performing live and being on stage is being alive like nothing else. I just need to figure the ins and outs of what a Sunset Neon show will consist of and the tech behind it. In the meantime, I’ll be kicking out more Sunset Neon singles, as well as brand new singles from my other project, Blue Stahli!
