Major spoilers ahead!
In tonight’s episode, one of Team Arrow’s original members decided it was time to leave town and right some huge wrongs.
Thea Queen (Willa Holland), Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) younger half-sister, left the team and Star City, leaving only four original cast members left on the show.
A rogue band of League of Assassins members called the Thanatos Guild set the stage for tonight’s episode. Athena (Kyra Zagorsky), their leader, travels to Star City in search of a map leading to an ancient treasure and believes Thea is the key to unlocking it.
Thea and Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) reluctantly enter the fray and figure it’s best to find the map first, and ultimately figure out that it leads to the existence of three new Lazarus Pits. Thea realizes she needed to find these pits and takes Roy with her.
Fans knew Willa’s departure was coming. It had been speculated since earlier on in the season due to her diminished role in the series. But her abrupt departure still stunned. This may not be the last we’ve seen of her, though.
“We talked about some requests (Holland) had for us in terms of how her episodes would be utilized and grouped, and at what point in the season she would be written out, and we accommodated her on all those fronts because, look, at the end of the day, we love Willa and we love working with her,” Marc Guggenheim told TV Line. “She’s done right by us and so we wanted to do right by her.”
So the door for Thea’s return remains open. We just don’t know the when or the how.
